I knew it had to be out there in cyberspace somewhere! So, nothing was really lost at all. Hooray! I had the text to it all and was piecing it back together, but even using my Google Reader archives I couldn't get it all. It appears that is no longer the case, as best as I can tell.

2 - Where was I piecing the old stuff back together at? A blogger site. And I incorporated most of my old blog that was lost and the blog before that (that was actually on blogger). I currently cannot start a post and leave it as a draft to finish later, people have trouble leaving comments, and Blogger is WAY better than it was when I first used it. So, in a few weeks I will just do my posting there and leave this site for other stuff. So, I will let you know when the change happens. And I almost promise this will be the last "mitchell happenings" move!

P.S. Any favorite sources for add-ons and backgrounds for blogger sites would be appreciated. :)

Collette 2009-09-22T21:52:26-07:00 Good-bye Just a Peek http://nathanandcollette.com/pc_url_8208055
We're still on a vacation and I have tons of old stuff to post. It was held in Park City again. I don't really know what went on the days and times I wasn't there, but one of the first stops upon my arrival was the park. Last year Zeke was quite confused by the name of the town, certain that we were going to a park all weekend. This year the confusion was held by Alexander, only he thought Park City was the name of the hotel.

At the park with all took a turn on some playground equipment. I am fine with that. I hate the ebb and flow of fashion. (Like why should I wear skinny jeans today when yesterday I was told they are not flattering on most body types?) I like the staples in clothing. The classics. The things that don't change. But, I also like some fun in my wardrobe. And as much as I like that by taking good care of my stuff so that it lasts, I also like to get new clothing now and then. I found this website called Sensibly Styled a few weeks ago and immediately liked it. My fondness grew after seeing THIS POST today. Now I just want to go through my closet and drawers (and truthfully the bin in the garage full of stuff that will likely never fit again, despite my want) and clean out. I have way more clothes than I actually wear, but still need just a titch more - solely for variety. (I am trying to step up my sewing to assist with this.) I would love to know where your favorite places in-store or online are to shop. (That means leave a comment today!)
I'm never going to be trendy. It's not me, it's not my thing. Occasionally there are trends that I do really like. The cute shirts with slightly puffy sleeves, the ruffles in the front, plaid shorts - I dig all of those (yet own none). I don't understand things like scarves and I doubt I'll ever put on leggings again (or heaven forbid - stirrups, which I saw in the store the other day!) Those are me in 4th grade, not now. But, I won't say never to them.

And, as to not leave you a post with no picture - this is from when I was about 9. My mom always made sure we had mix and match outfits. You may remember me mentioning it before because some of Nate's friends from his fantasy football league made it (and starred in it). I wanted to bring it up again because I have seen it now. I know you might be thinking - independent? made by some fantasy football dorks (your words, not mine!)? Mmm, pass. Don't. It was good and was actually a new idea. You haven't seen this one about a million times before. I really enjoyed the story, the camera work, and it's always fun to watch a movie with someone you know in in. Since I would ruin telling you what it is actually about, here's the officially synopsis "After their Mexican friend gets deported, two young Americans decide to begin smuggling illegal immigrants into Arizona for profit."

I finally saw Benjamin Button! I did my best to hear anything about it, but people who had seen it couldn't help but say it was too long and uh, well, not worth repeating. I don't know if the downer tone set before it was an influence, but I loved it. I will admit that I really like Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett too. That could have been another influence. I did fee a little bit sad during most of the movie and it definitely had its flaws, but it didn't feel like this enormously long movie not worth watching again to me.
The last two movies I want to mention are Stardust and Penelope.

When Stardust came out I thought it looked silly, but read enough good comments that I noted it might be something to watch later. That, too was added to a later list. I watched it with the boys this week. They fizzled out before it was over (I was amazed how long they lasted for a non-cartoon movie) and I was left finishing it alone. I thought it was cute and just a fun little story.

Collette 2009-08-01T08:38:54-07:00 Nothing Meaningful PNW http://nathanandcollette.com/pc_url_7486784
Ahhhh! As I have already shown with our timing on the trip, this one was not well planned. In fact, it is the worst planning job I've ever done on a vacation. That being said, I still did an OK job (since normally I am fantastic at planning trips - yes, I am totally patting myself on the back. What can I say? I love planning trips!). I did overlook a few things though. I picked the Ramada to stay at instead of the $20 lower priced Motel 6 (hey, we're not hotel snobs!) because they normally have a really good continental breakfast. We figured breakfast in the hotel would save time and the difference in $ between the 2 choices would be made up for by the food. Well, not ALL Ramadas have breakfast apparently. So we ate a greasy breakfast at McDonald's. Then, with tummies all hurting a little we set off for Canada. My super safe map obsessed husband at the wheel in our sweet rental car. We didn't take the main stop, which was probably a mistake. It was a mini strip mall with a Subway, Little Caesar's, a grocery store, a Greek food place and a few other shops. Nate sad no to Subway and headed for the Greek food (made by a Russian name Sergei). I thought I'd just pop into "Cost Cutters" and pick up some sandwich stuff for the kids and I. They pretty much did not have what I needed and everything was really expensive. So, i left with a bag of pretzels, some bananas for the kids, and a diet DP. Such a great lunch! Oh, and I snagged a 4 piece of Crazy Bread because I would have to wait like 10 minutes for a slice of pizza. So, our already mini bad moods got a little bigger at this point. So, if you are following you'll note that in just over a day's time, we have drug the kids around in 2 cars, 2 planes, 2 shuttle buses, a boat, and now another bus. The ferry from Tsawwassen, which is south of Vancouver doesn't actually go all the way to Victoria and we opted to NOT take the rental car on the ferry to save some money. That was probably a mistake, but "should haves" are our thing on this trip, I guess. While on the bus Zeke freaks out because he has to move to another seat to let people sit down. Bad moods move up yet another notch, especially for Nate because he was on Zeke duty while Alexander slept on my lap. And it does get worse. We discover that the hotel I chose (Howard Johnson because I like using my rewards card and it was priced nicely for us) is a little over half a mile from the closest stop for our bus. That's fine, but we had all of our bags with us (thankfully not the car seats!). So, we walk and walk. We get to the room and just want to crash. By this time it is around 6pm. Totally wasted day (but the ferry was nice). Not only was our hotel not near the bus stop, but it also wasn't near the points of interest in town. The places we wanted to go were roughly a 30 minute walk away. So, no time to rest. We prepped the kids for another long walk. Thankfully the trek was along a nice trail called the Galloping Goose Trail. There were a LOT of bikers and Nate I wished we could be biking on it.

It was actually a fun walk, minus the part where Zeke found a rock and then lost it and freaked out (again on Nate's watch - another notch up on the super happy scale). We thought about going in, but as I was taking a picture of Nate and Zeke (you might notice that Alexander is not in a lot of pictures. When a boy has to go he has to go. Nate took off with Zeke to find a bathroom ASAP. I tried to follow right behind with Alexander as to not lose them. We decided that we needn't bring our phones with us on this short voyage into town because we would not be separated. Well, Alexander didn't like that I put him in the stroller and rolled out of it before I could cross the street, insisting that he do it all by himself. So, we lost Nate and Zeke. We wandered a bit in the general area they went and finally I gave up and just went back by the Empress where I'd last been with them. Over 20 minutes later Zeke and a very mad Nate-dad appear. Nate reported that Zeke refused to go pee once he got in the stall and screamed for like 15 minutes. If it wasn't for the fact that Zeke actually needed to pee, we might have seen them sooner, but Nate wasn't interested in a second act of potty dance just a few minutes later. So, he waited in frustration until Zeke finally went. Typically on a trip I take a gazillion pictures and just show you what I consider the best. This time I am sharing pretty much all of them because we were all so grumpy that no one really wanted to pose and be all happy like. Again, I don't want you to think it was a terrible trip. It was not. It was really great and fun, but could have been much better. Moving on...Post the breakdown in the toilet, we walked over to the Parliament House. We actually almost missed our flight because we didn't want to end our visit with them.

So, we said good-bye and drove past the downtown again on the way the the airport.

Nate said the above picture was not proof alone that I went to Seattle, so here is my best self portrait in the car showing that, indeed, I really was there!

We hurry-hurried to the car rental place, got shuttle to the airport, dashed up to the ticket counter, were given a little tsk-tsk for our less than stellar arrival time, told to move fast to the gate because it was pretty far away. After our smoothest transition through security, we rushed to the gate. I was literally sweating when I went to the desk to get our stroller gate check tags. The attendant informed me we had a one hour delay. Good for our nearly missing the flight, but bad for our connecting flight. But at least we were getting out of one town and on our way to the next.

The plane ended up only being about half an hour late and we got to the Long Beach Airport with enough time to catch our next flight. I was told in Seattle that the standby list in Long Beach was super long and that we probably weren't going to get on once we got there. Thankfully and amazingly we got on the flight - with a catch. I had to ride jump-seat (where the flight attendants sit) and none of the other seats were together. After some serious tears on the plane and Zeke trying to be brave about sitting alone, the nice people around Nate traded their seats so that he was by both kids instead of neither. Let me tell you, we both flew much easier after that!

So, we made it home in one exhausted piece. Super pretty places that we went and for sure did not spend enough time at. I never thought I'd say this, but I really love Western Canada. Everything I've seen has been spectacular. Granted I have picked some of the best spots, but very few places I have been have surpassed their beauty. And Nate kicked San Francisco down a notch declaring Vancouver as his new favorite city. So, thanks for reading and get yourself to Canada!

Collette 2009-07-24T00:49:50-07:00 PNW Just a Question... http://nathanandcollette.com/pc_url_7465562
My blogging has evolved quite a bit from when I started back in November 2004. It used to be thoughts, ideas and random stuff - not a whole lot of my personal life. Since having the boys, it seems like all I do is give a report on what we did 3 days ago and possibly in too much, not very well written detail. I find myself not telling people stories in real life because I know they at least sometimes read the blog and I don't want them to have to rehear it. While blogs can be an interesting look into people's lives (hey lurkers!), in some ways it seems to break down traditional friendships/relationships. I like having the blog to report what I have been doing to help me remember it, but am wondering if I really need to share that with all of you - if my point is really to help be hold on to memories a little longer and more clearly.
So, help me to know not necessarily why you read, but what you like to read and what you can do without. A handful of you have read my blog(s) from the very beginning (when I began with Useless Thoughts) and have seen its evolution. Your thoughts? And please be honest. I like the truth.

Just looking for feedback. :)

And now I am off to start recapping our Seattle/Victoria/Vancouver mini trip.

Collette 2009-07-22T21:03:13-07:00 Just a Question... Jeffy Bees http://nathanandcollette.com/pc_url_7433520
Back in 2000 I made a new friend. He was my friend Bill's friend from BYU. For a long time I thought of Jeff just as Bill's BYU friend and then the as guy who would always get my roommate Joleen and my name mixed up (Jolette, Colleen). It wasn't too long though before I just though of Jeff as my friend. And partially because of him and Bill, I met Nate.

Nathan moved in with them and they were such fun dudes to watch hang out. One summer it was an every day occurrence. That happens to be one of my favorite summers on record. Events included the demolition derby, hitting golf balls at the driving range, camping in the west desert, going to Vegas so I could see Madonna, a day we affectionately named "grumpy Saturday, and the occasional baseball game.

One fall Jeff met a great girl named Nicole. They got married and the friendship continued, now with the added bonus of Nicole. Through more life events: us getting married, the Willards moving to Phoenix and back again, and 5 kids between us, we are still great friends. In fact they, along with his other old roommate Bill and his wife Adele (who live in San Diego) are very special friends to me for many reasons, but one being that they have been our friends for as long as I have known Nate. We've been able to actually hang out with them and continue the friendship instead of just, as Nate calls it, having "glory days" with them. I love hanging out with them. Jeff and Nate are in regular contact through their fantasy sports leagues.
